Success Stories

Cady and Cody Martin’s Bariatric Story

Sarah’s Story

I never realized how far I had let myself go. I was always active and athletic growing up but was always on the heavier side. After the birth of my daughter I had reached my limit. I was 250+ pounds and knew it was time to do something. I was always tired and found it very difficult to chase my toddler. I witnessed several of my friends have success after having weight loss surgery with Dr. McDermott. I finally made the decision to reach out to Dr. McDermott and had my surgery December 2020. I lost 100 pounds and have kept it all off!!! It changed not only my life but my family as well. We are more healthy and active as a result from my surgery.

Lindsey’s Story

I have struggled with my weight since I was nine years old. As the years went on from high school, to college, to nursing school and my early twenties, I continued to gain weight. Before I knew it, the scale was sitting at almost 350 lbs. Despite doing different diet fabs and exercises, I could see the 400s in my future. I knew enough was enough, and I had to get a handle on my weight. I was diagnosed with conditions such as pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, pre- hypertension. I could not even walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded and I was only 25! I’m a registered nurse at CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, Texas and I had witnessed and heard the testimonies of Dr. McDermott’s patients. I started looking into the surgery and researched everything that I needed to do. I made my first appointment with Dr. McDermott’s office to talk about the surgery and what was required to begin my journey. On October 13, 2020 with a BMI of 52 and a weight of 331, I had my sleeve with Dr. McDermott. 5 months later, I was down 100 pounds. I continued to lose weight slowly and steady – I lost a total of 141 pounds prior to becoming pregnant in 2021. I only gained 28 pounds during my pregnancy, and lost all of it within 2 weeks after delivering my beautiful daughter, who weighed 7 lbs and 15 ounces. By her first birthday I had lost 152lbs.

I was super nervous walking through the doors for the first time, but Dr. McDermott eased my nerves and answered all of my questions. The day of surgery was fabulous – my favorite part was getting a pillow of a stomach with everyone’s signatures. Going from a size 24 to a 12, feeling tiny on my wedding day, having a baby, and jogging a 5K without having to walk are just a few of the highlights this surgery has allowed me to have. I am no longer a pre-diabetic, I do not have high cholesterol, and I do not have high blood pressure. I cannot wait to see how many more milestones I am going to accomplish in the coming years – #1 is coaching my little girl in sport. I can’t express the extent of my gratitude to Dr. McDermott and his team. They gave me my life back and I will be the best ME that I can be!

Taylor’s Story

“I started Dr. McDermott’s program in January 2022 at 26 years old weighing 276 lbs. My cholesterol was in the 400s, I had severe acid reflux, suffered from IBS and Anxiety and Depression, and had a long family history of diabetes. I felt miserable.

In August 2022 I completed the program and had a gastric bypass. I met amazing friends and grew bonds with my nurses and my dietitian. This has never been a sprint but a marathon. It’s never seemed like an easy way out but a tool I have used to my advantage. My body is valuable so I fuel it like a sports car and don’t use food as a reward.

Dr. McDermott is honest and helpful. He encouraged me and made me feel unstoppable. I have definitely had some struggling moments but I never felt alone or like a failure. They host support groups where you can be open and honest. We are human but we can learn from our mistakes.

I have been able to do things with my kids that I have never been able to do. I lost 134lbs!! My cholesterol is normal, reflux gone, my IBS unnoticeable, and diabetes isn’t in my future. I lost the weight of a whole person. I went from 276lb to 142lb, Size 24 in jeans to a size 2, BMI from 59 to a 26, a 2x shirt to an adult small. I wish I would have done it sooner.”

Kimber’s Story

“My story has definitely been a journey. Having weight loss surgery not only changed but saved my life. I had my sleeve in December 2019 and weighed 256lbs. I couldn’t even walk up a flight of stairs and I was on heart and blood pressure medications. I was eating my life away. I had lost my dad to suicide in 2013 and I just let myself go. 6 months after my weight loss surgery I found out I had an aggressive Cervical Cancer. I was doing well from surgery and losing weight but being overweight had put me at higher risk of cancer. The numerous surgeries for my cancer was certainly easier to recover from and it has decreased my risks for the future.

I am completely healthy and Cancer free! I was healthy enough to fight and beat cancer and I can’t thank Dr. McDermott enough for helping me with this amazing new journey.”

Danielle’s Story

“Curvy me loved to work out, but never had energy. Curvy me loved to comfort myself with food. Curvy me couldn’t keep up with my two children. The new me has more energy to work out. The new me nourishes myself with food. The new me chases my two children.

This journey has been one amazing life lesson. My new tool has taught me how to eat the correct portions, something I never could do before. It has reduced my cravings for foods that aren’t nutritious. I feel healthier, happier, and more energetic than I’ve ever been.

I was a size 24 pant and 2X shirt before and now I am a size 6 pant and medium shirt.

I went from 237lbs to 131lbs

I went from morbidly obese to healthy.

New BMI: FABULOUS

My goal has been met.

Dakota’s Story

” Weight loss surgery was a fantastic kick-starter to my lifestyle change. From 300+ lbs. to 180 lbs., the sleeve helped me renew my energy, productivity, and dedication to healthy habits like eating well and working out. I ran my first (ever) 5k in under a year post-op and have never felt better! The Gastric Sleeve was not the easy way but was the best way to assist me reaching my goals. When I am asked about the surgery, I always recommend doing research and speaking with Dr. McDermott to see if it is right for you. Dr. McDermott and his staff were very helpful, knowledgeable, and put my family and I at ease during the process.
