Calculate Your BMI

BMI (Body Mass Index) is an estimated measurement of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both men and women between the ages of 18 and 65 years. A score of greater than 35 indicates you may qualify for weight loss surgery if you have a medical condition associated with obesity, a score of greater than 40 qualifies you for surgery without a medical condition.

The Procedure: Bariatric Surgery

There are many non-surgical treatments for obesity such as dieting, exercise, and medicines. Unfortunately these methods prove unsuccessful in the vast majority of patients once they meet the criteria for Bariatric surgery. Surgery then becomes the most reliable way to lose weight. Not only does surgery allow you to become satisfied with a smaller amount of food, it also affects the hormones that drive hunger. Your drive to eat while you lose weight is drastically reduced. Bariatric surgery may be suggested for patients with a high Body Mass Index (BMI) and other medical conditions related to obesity. The most common bariatric procedures are the sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

During the sleeve gastrectomy, Dr. McDermott removes the majority of your stomach, leaving behind a banana-shaped sleeve. Even though this procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach, it allows the stomach to function normally while decreasing the amount of food you can eat and lowers Grehlin, the hormone that drives hunger.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass reduces your stomach size and reroutes your digestive tract. During surgery, your stomach is divided to create a new, smaller stomach. The new stomach is connected to the small intestine and bypasses the larger part of your original stomach. Your new stomach is now much smaller. The amount of food it can hold is much less and the calories are not absorbed as efficiently because of the “bypassed” intestine.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bariatric Surgery

Do I Qualify for Weight Loss Surgery?

To qualify for weight loss surgery, you should:

Have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40, be at least 100 pounds overweight, or more than twice your ideal weight; or have a BMI over 35 with a coexisting medical problem related to obesity (i.e., diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, or osteoarthritis);

How Long Will I Stay in the Hospital?

Time in the hospital depends on the surgical procedure. For the gastric sleeve, expect to stay in the hospital 1 night; gastric bypass, 2 nights.

How Soon Can I Return to Work After Surgery?

This also depends on the surgical procedure. For the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass, expect to be off work for 1-3 weeks.

Will My Insurance Cover the Surgery?

This depends on the insurance provider. Many plans provide coverage for weight loss surgery as a benefit but may require documentation of physician supervised weight loss for a specified time frame before surgery but some do not. Our office is skilled at determining if your insurance plan covers weight loss surgery.

What if My Insurance Does Not Cover the Surgery?

Surgery may also be provided through “private pay” options. Up to 3 year 0% interest payments available. Please call or make an appointment with our patient advocate for further information.

Will I be Able to Eat Normal Foods After the Surgery?

What is normal? This depends. The goal of surgery is for you to feel satisfied with less food. Although certain foods may be tolerated better than others you will be able to eat solid foods. Through our education process before and after surgery, you will learn what is better for you and what is not. Generally, avoiding food high in sugar or fat is a good idea.

How do I Know Which Surgery is Best for Me?

The particular surgery you choose for weight loss is your decision. If there is a reason you should not have a particular one, Dr. McDermott will address that in your consultation and offer a better option.
